2015 USA Road Trip Day 3: Bedford PA to Richmond IN
Today is the most driving for the least amount of things to see - I only had one planned stop, and I've decided not to even do that now. I'm about 25 miles from the Flight 93 memorial, but I've found out it opens at 9am, so I'd have to leave about an hour and a half later than I intended. I've checked the weather forecast and it's snowing in western Ohio and Indiana from about lunchtime, so I need to get most of my miles done before then. The snow is all to the south and west of where I am, so I can't completely avoid it. By the time I get to St Louis tomorrow night the snow should be over and the temperatures almost approaching 0C again!
It's still really really cold. And forget the wind chill, -7F was the lowest I saw (about -22C).
Drove for a couple of hours through the Laurel Highlands in Pennsylvania - it was nice to be driving in the Monday morning rush hour and have the road completely to myself. This was where the temperature was the coldest - down to -7F.
After a couple of hours I stopped off at the Ohio Valley mall to buy a SD card reader - but the Radio Shack had sold out of them! I was just going to remark that I'd driven 150 miles to get there, but she then directed me to the K Mart, a massive "we sell everything" store at the other end of the mall, and they did have one, so my photos are free again. I also found a T shirt for Jay and some diet cream soda, which isn't too bad - a bit strong on the vanilla but drinkable. The mall was very smart and carpeted too although it wasn't top end, otherwise they wouldn't have had a baseball batting cage in it.
It turns out I got my timing just right. I managed to get to Columbus Ohio by lunchtime and it started snowing at that point. For the first hour the snow was so fine it didn't cause any real driving problems at all. For the last hour before I reached my intended stop the roads did start to get snowy but I managed to make it to my hotel by about 2.45pm. That gave me the rest of the day to enjoy the gym and swimming pool and go out to get something to eat.
I went to Clara's Pizza King - a really nice little pizza restaurant with an old London double decker bus inside - it seems they drove it there and built the restaurant around it. And I made them get me a tea, which took them about 15 minutes because the server didn't really know how to do that.
The phone on the tables were nice touches too - you had to place your order by picking it up.
Despite driving on snowy roads it was actually a very enjoyable day driving, particularly going through the Appalachian mountains towards Bedford, where some fantastic views opened up in front of me while I was driving.

I think I'm meant to do an "About" here but I think you'd be more interested in seeing a random seagull.
