Band Photos - The Red Penguin - home page
What's new: 09/12/2006: At the Astoria last night to see My Life Story (could be their last ever gig) with Sohodolls in support. Didn't manage to get as many pics as I wanted to because of the arseholes in security (even though I had an AAA press pass). 23/11/2006: Possible gig of the year last weekend at the Laugardalshöll in Reykjavík as I was lucky enough to see the Sugarcubes' first gig since 1992, and of course it was like they never went away! Support came from two more Icelandic bands, múm and the wonderfully named Rass (English: arse). 15/11/2006: I realise I've got a bit behind and I am going to TRY to do something about that! First off, I was at two gigs last night. The Others were at the legendary 100 Club in London's Oxford Street, supported by Dustin's Bar Mitzvah Straight after that I headed half a mile west to see Mama Shamone do their thing at Club 43. 31/03/2006: Bit of a full on rawk gig, watching Rattlesnake Remedy supported by local band Whoremoan. 22/03/2006: I've finally got my photos up from A's excellent Metro Club gig from last year! 14/03/2006: Photos from Kings College in London where I Went to see the White Rose Movement supported by the Violets. 08/03/2006: Managed to catch the wonderful punk/pop/rock/electronic stylings of Mama Shamone at the Hoxton Bar last night. 18/02/2006: Photos from three bands playing tonight who I've seen recently and really enjoy seeing to get them on the same bill was brilliant. Once again I give you the Frank and Walters supported by iDou and Hybrasil. 09/02/2006: Last night I was at the Push Bar in Soho, possibly the smallest venue in the world. Excellent performances from the Fighting Cocks, MJ Hibbett and Leeeevil. In a word, it was GRATE! 20/12/2005: More photos from the Sultans of Ping, this time from their live shows in Dublin and Belfast. Well worth the car journey, the band are as great live as they ever were in the early 90s. 08/12/2005: The awesome Dead 60s live at a sold-out show at the Electric Ballroom in Camden, supported by the less awesome Suzukis. 04/12/2005: Back to Chinnery's in Southend for The Others, the fourth time that me and my little camera have caught them this year. Support was from Basildon band Jacksonswarehouse. 29/11/2005: It's 2005, I've been asleep for 20 years and the kids are suddenly listening to prog again! Definitely worthwhile in the case of the excellent Mystery Jets who I caught live at Chinnery's in Southend, supported ably by Ludes and Les Incompetents. 19/11/2005: The highlight of the winter so far - the beloved and mighty Sultans of Ping are back in a tracksuit and playing in a town near you very soon (if you live in Ireland). I don't but I did manage to persudae them to come and play here in Essex, yes it was all my fault, sorry! Support came from Fruitbat's iDou and local Canvey band The Dirty Fairies. 14/11/2005: More photos of the Frank and Walters - that's twice in one year I've seen them now, haven't done that for quite a few years! They were supported by another Irish band, the excellent electro-rock Hybrasil and also Beauty Shop, whose alt country stylings probably didn't fit in with the other two bands but they were very good all the same, so I got my money's worth alright! 24/10/2005: Another gig, this time The Subways supported by The Kooks at the sold-out show at the Junction in Cambridge. 23/10/2005: Managed to get into a free Amnesty International gig in Shoreditch this afternoon and caught The Others and Starsailor in front of a very small crowd of about 200 people. 20/10/2005: Saw Robocop Kraus supported by ¡Forward, Russia! at the Metro Club last night - both bands on superb tip top form. 11/08/2005: Added the photos from last Tuesday's show at the Dublin Castle in Camden - in particular Bis, who are not Bis any more but have reformed under the name Data Panik, and also 5 18 year-old Norwegian girls (that'll get the hits up a bit) Luxury Of Feeling Fine. 04/08/2005: Back to the Garage at Highbury Corner to see an old band for the first time - Jesus Jones. They were supported by The Jungle. 01/08/2005: Down to Westcliff on Sea and Club Riga, one of the noisiest, hottest, sweatiest venues I have been to in a while - perfect for the comedy stylings of Hayseed Dixie. Frontman Barley Scotch is a great showman but this doesn't detract from the fact that they are all fantastic musicians - well worth seeing live if they appear anywhere near you sometime soon. 25/07/2005: Added the photos I took at Maximo Park last Wednesday. 01/07/2005: Got the tube up to Hyde Park for the Wireless Festival yesterday and managed to go home with lots of assorted junk covered in Nokia logos (including a football which I've had plenty of use out of already) and also had time to see sets from The Rakes, The Others, Editors, Soulwax, Ladytron, Babyshambles and my favourites of the day, El Presidente. 28/06/2005: Went to see the excellent Frank and Walters at my new favourite venue, the Water Rats in Kings Cross. It was the first time I'd seen them since the autumn of 2000, although they have been gigging regularly in Ireland. There will be more UK gigs late this year or early next year, and hopefully I will be at all of them - it's just that good a night out. 26/05/2005: Added pics from last night's Girls Aloud show in Ipswich which was highly entertaining. 01/03/2005: I've stopped doing the monthly charts, as the pageviews referred from Google have gone crazy, and made mincemeat of my tracking system. I am looking at a new PHP based one but until then I will leave it. The average number of visitors per day has gone up from around 300 before Christmas to around 1,200 - hope you enjoy it here! 23/01/2005: just got back from seeing Pop Will Eat Itself at the Carling Academy in Birmingham. 17/12/2004: added two shows I went to this week - Human League at the Regent Theatre in Ipswich and Ned's Atomic Dustbin at the Garage in Highbury - both were excellent in very different ways. All the pictures were taken by me at gigs and UK festivals over the last ten years. I mean, I can't really see the point of putting up a website devoted to other people's pictures. In most cases they have been taken with a digital camera (I am currently using a Fuji Finepix F700) or scanned from a Canon EOS-300. Some of the older, crappier pics have been taken with older, crappier cameras. (The King Adora ones were taken with a £3 disposable camera). I am usually in the crowd, I rarely get a press pass, I just have the common touch. Copyright: this belongs to redpenguin.net but if you want to use the pics on another site then you can do so as long as you give me a link back. And if you let me know you've done this then I'll give you a link on here too, so you get two for the price of one! |
If you like the pics you might (or might not like) some music too:
