Aggrasoppar – OY Brewery, Tórshavn

We’re on a tour of the Faroes and Iceland and it’s our last night in the capital of the Faroe Islands. There doesn’t seem to be much going on in downtown Tórshavn. We’re staying on the outskirts of the town, a nice hotel on what seems like an industrial estate.

While walking around, we found a microbrewery literally round the corner to us – and they had a gig on tonight. I looked up the band – Aggrasoppar – and found that they are “a flower-punk / axekiller-pop band from the Faroe Islands, infamous for their chaotic live performances where you never know what to expect out of their surprisingly big and diverse repertoire – everything from harsh noise to soft country.” So we decided not to listen to them in advance and turn up at the gig regardless.

We managed to get a table in front of the stage and thought – this is good, nice view. Turns out the band is a six piece, and the pianist, guitarist and bass were on the main stage – the band’s three vocalists were sitting on a sofa in the middle of the room, a few tables behind us. So we had this split stage thing for the whole gig. Hard to describe the music but I think I would say a mix of free-form jazz, country, glitch beats and Faroese rap. I loved it. Also, the brewery room was pretty full and their beer was excellent.

We were chatting with one of the singers afterwards (Eydfinn, lovely guy) and he said they’ve never done the split thing before but they just want to something different every time – they played the local furniture shop last time. They also play the UK every year. I heartily recommend them!
