Melin Melyn, Ynys, Pys Melyn – Town Hall, Llangollen

The graphic department were pretty busy today

Another new town and new venue to watch gigs in! This gig, part of the Llangollen Fringe Festival, seemed like a dream line up as it was meant to be co-headlined by Adwaith – but they had to pull out on the day (Covid is still a thing).

Disappointing but not too despondent as the rest of the line up are great, including the wonderful Ynys, who have released a second album, Dosbarth Nos, as good as their first.

Llangollen is a lovely little town but you try parking in it – either in the tourist season, or the season that isn’t the tourist season. It’s a good time to turn to religion and start praying.

Pys Melyn (“yellow peas”) are a good band, and it’s the second time I’ve caught them live this year. I’m not quite sure what to make of their sound though!

Ynys (“island”) had a fantastic set – they always seem so tight live. I had a chat with Heledd and Sam from HMS Morris, who both play in both bands (I only realised this tonight).

I love Melin Melyn (“yellow mill”) as they have a real folky quirkiness about them, although Mrs Penguin doesn’t agree. She likes it when they rock out more.

    Ynys setlist:

  • Newid
  • Dosbarth Nos
  • There’s Nothing The Sea Doesn’t Know
  • Môr Du
  • Welcome to the Island
  • Shindig
  • Gyda Ni
  • Aros Amdanat Ti
  • Caneuon
  • Aros Am Byth

This is the view I had from the restaurant we ate in just before the gig. Beautiful, isn’t it? No wonder there aren’t any parking spaces anywhere …
