Melys, Yr Anghysur – Neuadd Ogwen, Bethesda
A Saint David’s Day special! My third Melys gig and my second one at this venue, almost a year after the first, so I have got a little bit of deja vu with this one. But the drive there and home again is nice, even though Bethesda is two hours from home, and the Bangor Travelodge is cheap, comfortable and quiet (which doesn’t explain why I sleep so badly there every time).
Yr Anghysur (“the discomfort” – I love the idea that a band would call themselves that!) were the only support, as Ffenest had dropped out. They’re more soft rock than spiky alternative, a bit like a Welsh Pink Floyd. There was some great guitar work on that stage, and some long songs (but not really long songs). I liked them.
Melys was up to their usual high standards, and the songs from the forthcoming album are sounding great – they played three tonight. And even though I’ve only been watching them live for a year or so, I think Un Darllenwr Lwcus/Disgo Pig are the best two songs to end any gig on, anywhere.
It was nice to hang around after the gig too and have a proper chat with Andrea and Paul. Hopefully won’t be too long before I catch them again!
