Pop Will Eat Itself – T & C 1, Kentish Town

First of two nights at the Town & Country Club – now stupidly called the T&C 1 – for PWEI, part of a tour celebrating, I think, the release of Get The Girl! Kill The Baddies! The single was PWEI’s most successful, entering the charts at no 9 – in the same week that they were dropped by record label RCA. They appeared on Top of the Pops this week too.
The top 40 this week also included Jesus Jones (10), the Frank and Walters (11), the Prodigy (19) and the Sultans of Ping FC (26) – so PWEI, the Frank and Walters and the Sultans of Ping all had their highest singles chart placing on the same week.
Support bands tonight were Meat Beat Manifesto and Back To The Planet. I think we were in the Bull and Gate getting a drink – we weren’t particularly excited about getting there an hour and a half early to see those bands.
This was my second PWEI gig. As I would go on to see them another 14 times over the next 32 years, I assume it left a good impression on me!
The audio from the whole gig has been put up on Soundcloud – and you can hear it here:
