Soft Cell – Ocean, Hackney
I don’t remember a lot about this gig. It was the one and only time I went to Ocean, a massive council-run community arts space that you’d get in Hackney but not your borough. Ocean is no longer there – it closed down in 2004 and as at 2025 I think is now the Hackney Picturehouse.
This gig was a comeback of sorts – they released their Cruelty Without Beauty album the following year, their first new album in 17 years. They did only play a couple of songs from it. I recall Mrs RP – a very keen Soft Cell/Marc Almond fan – being delighted to hear Martin played in the encore.
