Day 7: Twyfelfontein to Etosha Safari Lodge
Cullinan says: 330 km / 205 mi, 5 hr 30 min
Google says: 316 km / 196 mi, 3 hr 32 min
Actual: 320 km / 199 mi, 4 hr 30 min (gravel roads 96 km / 60 mi)
We left Twyfelfontein just after 9am. The road back to Khorixas seemed better today, although it still took 1 hr 50 mins to do the 96km we needed to drive before we hit the tarmac which started just before the town. We stopped for about 15 mins, successfully negotiating a police roadblock, until we got going again.
The next town, Outjo, is 130km away and as we’re now on good roads it took just over an hour. We filled up with petrol and got lunch at the famous Outjo Bakkerie. I had a meat pie, chips and gravy for £2.60. The place was very clean, tidy and relaxed – again, we could have been anywhere in the world.
Another 90km on tar roads and we made it to our final stop at Etosha Safari Lodge, checking in at 3pm, much earlier than our recent check-ins. Our room is once again very big, isn’t far from the bar and restaurant and has a great view of the massive plains. Dinner was okay – a lot of South Africans here.
