The harbour
Every Friday night a few “pop up bars” appear at the harbour, and the locals go there and drink, eat and listen to loud music. Lively!
As Friday this week is Good Friday and EVERYTHING shuts in Saint Helena on Good Friday, this all took place on the Thursday instead.
We went down to the harbour at around 5pm with Derek and Linda. At some point Linda disappeared and came back with pizzas – perhaps the only ones on the island. We’re still unsure where they came from, but they were good restaurant pizzas (not frozen ones from a shop).
As it was Maundy Thursday, all the local fisherman go out in the evening to catch fish for the weekend, which adds to the liveliness. We were chatting with a few people including some people from the USA and the UK who had come to the island for work.
On Good Friday we went out for a boat ride in the morning, to see a whale shark and about 500 dolphins. We stayed in in the evening and Derek cooked us a ton of fish, including bullseye (a tasty fish with enormous eyes) and a local eel of some kind.
