The pub crawl

Including restaurants there are a few licenced premises, but I think only two places that you’d properly call a pub, so we decided to go on a mini pub crawl.

We wondered what the standard beer was going to be on the island. We were not very excited to see it was Windhoek, with a bit of Castle Lite from time to time, and nothing else. As we’d just spent three weeks in Namibia and South Africa we were hoping for something a bit different. Still, a pint was generally between £2 and £3 in both pubs and restaurants here.

We started at The Standard. It was very gloomy in here – no one had turned the lights on. The guy behind the bar was talking to a couple of locals, but barely acknowledged us when we got our drink. He was wearing a Liverpool shirt – with the season they’ve had you thought he might have been a bit more cheerful.

Opposite the Standard is the White Horse Tavern. This place was very gloomy too. I tried to chat with the barman but he wasn’t having any of it – he just wanted to watch the football on TV.

Saints (people from Saint Helena) are very friendly, but we didn’t manage to crack the code tonight. The harbour was a much better place to go and get a drink, as you will see …

By the way both of these pubs were much darker than the photos suggest – my phone went over to Night mode when I was taking the pics.
