Latitude Festival 2018 – Henham Park, Southwold
Bands seen: Gaffa Tape Sandy, Suzi Wu, Idles, Sleeper, Fickle Friends, Black Honey, Mogwai, Killers, Boy Azooga, Breeders, Pip Blom, Liam Gallagher, Whenyoung, W H Lung, Alvvays, My Sad Captains, Charlatans, Lower Slaughter, Hinds, La Femme, Bodega, Sun Scream
Back again for another year! Like every other year, I was working and got some great interviews in with Idles, Whenyoung, Lower Slaughter, Hinds and Bodega. Interviewing Joe was a real big tick on my interview bucket list, and he was great although probably not as excited as I was. All of the other bands I met were lovely. Despite Latitude being a big corporate thing now, everyone is just so chilled here.
My band highlights – Idles obviously, and Sleeper obviously. Sleeper played their set at the same time as the World Cup final, which England nearly made it to. It would have been satisfyingly odd if that had been the case, since Louise Wener was born on the day that England won the World Cup, 30 July 1966.
Liam Gallagher was a “surprise” addition to the festival. I’ve never seen Oasis live, and when his band started playing the opening bars of Rock ‘N’ Roll Star, I thought wow – this is going to be REALLY GOOD. Then Liam came on stage and started singing and I wished his vocal chords were 20 years younger.
The Charlatans are always excellent no matter how big the stage. I love these two pictures – Tim Burgess taking a photo of the crowd at the same time that I’m taking a photo of him doing it …
I also enjoyed the Killers despite never playing them at home. Bodega, Hinds, Alvvays, Pip Blom and My Sad Captains were good. And a special mention to The Breeders – I know very little of their music (other than MTV 90s favourite Cannonball) but their set was wonderful.
