Taffy, Gum – The Black Heart, Camden

It may have been the hottest day of the year, and also the hottest venue I can remember for years and years, but Taffy had come to Brentwood for their second radio session with us the day beforehand so it was only polite to return the favour and check out their London gig.

There were many more people than the last time I’d seen them in London, maybe because they didn’t do three different gigs there this time, but seemed to be a lot more of the local Japanese community there too this time round.

Needless to say – but I’ll say it anyway – Taffy were great, again. Their second album Lixiviate has just come out and it’s as strong as the first, a real good slice of 90s indie pop, again almost Britpoppy too.

I wasn’t quite so taken by Gum, the sort of band I thought I’d like, but I think the sound system at the venue may have had a hand in that. It’s only because I’m so familiar with Taffy’s songs that it wasn’t so much of a problem as I was playing them in my head during their set. Sorry Gum.
